Rookery Blogs Post New Entry

All Change

Well, Inkpen has flown away! He got out when the window was open, flew into some trees.

He stayed around the house for a couple of days, cawing but, as per normal, not deigning to come out of the trees he was cawing at us from! Then he just went, possibly with a small group of Jackdaws.

The rooks arent in the rookery at present, but some of them visit daily, they are away probably at a parliament nearby so that will be where he's gone. He's very lucky, being hardly accustomed to humans at all he has got the best return to nature he could have got, he was really more Reigny's rook than he was ours!

Reigny is still with us, she is still Jo's little girl and doing very well.

And we have a new arrival called Mystic Crow!

Poor thing, Jo found him in the wood and he was in shock and all his chest feathers had been plucked, we think by a sparrowhawk!

He looks very sorry for himself but he perches and feeds very well, he's got very strong claws and beak, being a crow. He hasnt found his voice yet but I'm sure he will one day soon. The name was inspired by the Valkyrie Mist who was an aspect of morgan le fay in the arthurian legend; story here - Valkyrie Mist

Mum is off to kings lynn this morning to meet Em from Lincs. rook rescue who has a tiny rook that needs looking after so there's another new arrival on the way!

I see what you mean about Mystic Crow suffering trauma, Jo! I have never seen a crow plucked so bald.

Good luck with baby rook and thank you for taking her. You can name her whatever you feel, and if she comes back she will have a herb name added too - so she will have two names like Angelica Squiggle here. She will probably be glad of Reigny's company.

I think she was hoping Lady Oscar would mother her this morning, but Oscar stared at her hopefully open beak as if she was some kind of alien species that had never before been seen in the aviary. Although Oscar's own eggs were infertile, she obviously isn't looking to adopt!

Baby rook seems quite tired after her journey and wanting to rest, Reigny very interested, but I'll let them get acquainted a bit at a time. Yes, poor mystic Crow is certainly a sorry sight at present, hopefully things can only get better! Jo

My word Jo you've been busy!! I love the names for your feathered family, mystical names really seem to suit these birds. You have obviously given these young birds a great start and you must have mixed feelings about Inkpen leaving 'home' but it's great that he is confident enough to go out into the big wide world. Poor Mystic!!! At least it's summer so he shouldn't get too cold! Lots of luck with them all. Magic will update his blog in the next day or two and says a big SQUAWK to you all.
Best wishes Mandy
