I have some species of corvid given to me to rescue. It was in bad shape, splay legged and broken legged. I splinted the broken leg with a foley catheter piece which worked well, and then the make up sponges to keep the splay legs from staying put. I've since added calcium to the diet and removed the braces and he's fine, a bit wobbly but fine. The legs healed nicely and he's no longer limping and able to perch atm. I've been giving him high protien kitten food, high protien baby cereal with yoghurt and apples for the calcium, and a bit of hand feeding formula for the vitamins atm, and he's picking up weight nicely. Like I say he can perch now, but he has no feathers around the beak and eyes, and I was wondering if you might know the species? The family that brought him to me called him a grackle but he has black eyes, so i think not. He has black feathers purple in the sunlight, and an oddly shaped tail which is a bit bent from him backing up and balancing when he had the braces on. He has absolutely no feathers on his face and looks rather like a monkey of sorts. lol. His beak us semi hooked like a raven's. He's small, tho, about the size of my hand. He just started perching, now and is horrifically imprinted on humans, me specifically, anyone else can come in the room and he puffs up at them, but tolerates the husband. We are in the us, Ga to be specific... (tho I am originally from Manchester) I've asked the people here, but they either want him to be released (which would be murder for him) or to give him to a rehabber, but he's imprinted already. His sole source of comfort is my hand whilst I type one handed on the lap top. He crawls there to sleep. When he was brought to me it was touch and go as the family was feeding him a prepared formula for seed eaters, and he had no weight at all, and VERY feeble. I added the cat food and a tad of oil and he picked up weight in 2 days, he ate about every 10 minutes for the first 10 hours before his first bowel movement, which should tell you how depleted he was of sustinance. So he's happy and healthy and bouncy and starting to fledge now if ONLY to follow me around cos he's nosey, wants to see me at all times. If I go to the wc, he thinks it's HIS obligation to follow now. So with this info, have you any idea how old he might be? Or what kind of corvid? I've been looking everywhere and have not found a place that has any idea as of yet. He's hoppy, now, not flying, just hops to find me. The person that had him kept him in a lidded box so he couldn't pop out, but he wasn't old enough, and it scared him from moving for over 2 weeks. I have a cage for him that is larger than a parrot's, but he's not ready to go there, as he's never been behind bars yet, and I don't want to stress him yet. He's smaller than your poet atm, with no feathers on the face. I can't find anywhere that has any idea what species he is... Help?
